Defensible Space Program - March, 2010
From Megan Atkinson, of the Mariposa County Fire Safe Council:
I would like to take this opportunity to let you know that The Mariposa County Fire Safe Council has a new Defensible Space Program that has been granted to us through the California Fire Safe Council, and funded by the US Forest Service. The program is called, "Reducing Exposure to Catastrophic Wildfire through Fuel Reduction".
The Council has been assisting Mariposa residents with the brushing and chipping of their Defensible Space fuels, but now we are able to help residents with weedeating, raking and cleaning gutters. We clear 30-50 feet from all permanent structures. The program is available to all Mariposa residents. We will do the clearing for those who cannot afford to pay someone to come out and do the work and are unable to do the work themselves (low income, and senior over 60, disabled, or deployed). For those residents who are capable of weedeating, raking, and cleaning their own gutters, or paying someone to do the work, we ask that they pile the vegetative debris, and we will come out to their residence and dispose of the piles for them, where we take the debris to the Mariposa Landfill to be recycled! The program runs through 2010.
If you know of anyone in need of this service, or have any questions, please have them call me at the Mariposa County Fire Safe Council office, 209-966-7700 or e-mail me at megana@sti.net. Also, we are continuing our brushing and chipping program, so again if you know of anyone who could use the help, you know where to find me!! Thanks and have a great day!
Thanks,
Megan Atkinson

Kidding Around at Dawn Lake Playground
Gussie Kidd reports that at least 15 families are attending the pre-school playgroup on Monday mornings at the playground. Several grandparents are coming with their grandchildren now. The group had a summer camp out at the lake. If you would like to attend, just show up any Monday with your baby/toddler/pre-schooler. The fun starts at 10:30am at the Dawn Lake Playground!
An Apple Orchard
The Lushmeadows Ranch Barns were built by the Preston Foundation of Los Angeles in 1943. The plan was to have a mountain dairy and milking barn and sell "exotic milk" in Los Angeles. It did not happen. The Barns were then sold to a judge and two lawyers out of Los Angeles who used it as a playground.... more
